32Connects is a joint partnership transportation project between the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) and the City of Westfield to improve corridor mobility along State Road 32 through the downtown Westfield area.

The project aims to improve mobility for both motorists and pedestrians by reconstructing State Road 32 into a four-lane boulevard roadway from Poplar Street to Timberbrook Run. The project includes a new roundabout at the intersection of State Road 32 and East Street along with improved pedestrian sidewalks, crosswalks, signage, and landscaping throughout the corridor.

A plan takes shape

In 2018, The City of Westfield’s long-time vision for their downtown took one giant step towards reality when they engaged in a 50/50 partnership with the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) to address the congestion and lack of pedestrian safety on SR 32. This partnership took the purpose beyond a highway improvement project to a complete downtown transformation.

We were aiming to improve mobility and safety on SR 32 and redefine the future of downtown Westfield for drivers, pedestrians, business owners, and residents alike.

Project History

Over the past five years, INDOT, Westfield, and the design team led by engineering consulting firm American Structurepoint have coordinated extensively with stakeholders to minimize and mitigate impacts to the Westfield Historic District and downtown Westfield businesses.

A robust public outreach campaign helped to inform critical design decisions throughout the project development process. The result of this work is a transportation project that balances improved vehicular mobility and enhanced pedestrian safety while celebrating Westfield’s rich history and notable downtown Historic District.
